Where to go in Kazakhstan in winter

In winter Kazakhstan's outdoors narrows to a few reliable options: skiing at Shymbulak above Almaty, an empty snow-dusted Charyn and the pine-forest parks of the north — Burabay, Kokshetau and Bayanaul.

  • 6 places on the list
  • Verified: 2026-10
  1. 01 Shymbulak A ski resort at 2260–3200 m, 20–30 minutes from central Almaty; a 4.5 km gondola climbs up from Medeu. late November – early April Talgar Pass, 3,200 m day trip
  2. 02 Charyn Canyon Snow on the ledges and plateau, sheer red walls and hardly anyone around. The downsides: short days and a dirt access road. December–February 195 km east of Almaty day trip
  3. 03 Medeu Bottom station of the Shymbulak gondola and home of the resort's rental. The famous ice rink is closed for rebuilding until late 2027. December–March Rink at 1,691 m day trip
  4. 04 Burabay Pines, granite and frozen lakes 257 km from Astana: skiing, skating, winter walks. The weekend surcharge doesn't apply in winter. December–February About 257 km from Astana weekend
  5. 05 Kokshetau Snowy birch groves and the quiet lakes of Shalkar and Imantau: walks, ice fishing and photography. December–February About 60 km from Kokshetau weekend
  6. 06 Bayanaul Granite hills in snow above Zhasybay and Toraigyr. Winter search interest is 7.5 times below July's — it's nearly empty. December–February First national park, 1985 weekend

Winter honestly shrinks your choices in Kazakhstan. The high mountain lakes — Big Almaty, Kolsai, Kaindy — disappear under snow behind avalanche slopes, ice and dirt roads in unknown condition. What remains either works in winter or is even better for it: the Shymbulak ski resort right above Almaty, an empty Charyn with snow on red rock, and the pine-forest parks of the north — Burabay, Kokshetau and Bayanaul, all three on the winter list the Ministry of Tourism and Sports published in November 2025.

Below are six places, with what to do, how to get there and what is closed. At the end: places to skip until spring.

1. Shymbulak — skiing above Almaty

The south’s main winter destination. The base station sits at 2260 m and the top at the Talgar Pass, 3200 m; Wikipedia lists 20 runs. A 4.5 km gondola climbs from Medeu in 15 minutes or less, and the ministry puts the drive from central Almaty to the mountains at 20–30 minutes. In 2025/26 the resort announced its technical opening on 26 November, and in April 2026 the lifts closed in stages from 9–16 April for maintenance until 1 May — a fair guide to the season’s span. Note the new access rules for Medeu and Shymbulak adopted in September 2026: combustion-engine cars will be restricted and electric cars admitted on weekdays only. See Shymbulak.

2. Charyn Canyon — snow on red rock

The most underrated winter option. Snow settles on the plateau, ledges and terraces while the vertical walls stay red, a contrast you get in no other season — and there is almost nobody around. January averages about −10.7 °C in the upper Charyn, and precipitation is low, so a snowy scene isn’t guaranteed. Light is the real limit: Almaty gets around 9 hours of daylight in December, and the drive takes 3–4 hours each way. Leave before dawn and wear grippy boots — the path into the Valley of Castles is loose ground. The fee is the same as in summer. See Charyn in winter.

3. Medeu — gateway to Shymbulak

The high-altitude rink at 1691 m, with about 10,500 m² of ice, is not running: Tengrinews reported in December 2025 that it is closed for reconstruction for at least two years, and Kapital.kz says completion is planned for Q4 2027. In winter Medeu still matters as the bottom station of the Shymbulak gondola — for 2025/26 the resort moved its main rental area and seasonal lockers to the Medeu base station. Medeu is a regional nature park, not part of Ile-Alatau, and Almaty sets its own access rules. See Medeu.

4. Burabay — pines and lakes near Astana

The ministry’s winter list pitches Burabay as a family destination: skiing, skating and winter walks among the pines, by Okzhetpes rock and Lake Burabay. Access is easy — about 257 km and three hours from Astana on the A1, or by train to Kurort-Borovoe station (express services take 2 h 28 min – 2 h 45 min). A handy detail from the park’s tariff act: the higher weekend vehicle fee (0.4 MCI) applies only from 1 May to 30 September, so in winter even weekends cost the base 0.3 MCI per day. Check with your accommodation which rentals and rinks are running — past reports say it depends on snowfall. See Burabay.

5. Kokshetau — birches and ice fishing

Burabay’s neighbour, but a different mood: about 60 km south-west of Kokshetau town, on the border of the Akmola and North Kazakhstan regions. The ministry’s winter list highlights snowy birch groves and the quiet lakes of Shalkar and Imantau, with walks, photography and ice fishing. Imantau is a freshwater lake over 13 km long with an island; Shalkar is salty and up to 15 m deep. The nearest railway station is Kokshetau, about 1.5 hours away by car. Fish only under the park’s rules. See Kokshetau National Park.

6. Bayanaul — empty granite hills

Our seasonality study found Bayanaul to be the most seasonal place we measured: its July search peak is 7.5 times its December low. In winter you’ll have it nearly to yourself. The ministry included the park in its winter list — Lakes Zhasybay and Toraigyr, the Konyr-Auliye cave, the Botakoz valley — for skiing, excursions and photo walks. The climate is harsh, with an annual mean of about 3.2 °C, so bring full winter kit. From Pavlodar via Ekibastuz it took 3–4 hours in 2017 reporting. See Bayanaul.

Where not to go in winter

  • Big Almaty Lake. November to April the road is under snow with avalanche risk. More.
  • Kaindy. No reliable data on the gorge track in winter; don’t walk on the ice. More.
  • Kolsai. The trail to the middle lake is open April to October.
  • Turgen Gorge and Lake Issyk. In January 2025 the Issyk road was closed for the avalanche period and the Turgen checkpoint ran limited hours. More.
  • Singing Dune. Some Altyn-Emel roads close in December.
  • Kok-Zhailau. We found no reliable information on the trail in winter — don’t go without experience and an avalanche check.

The ministry also lists Katon-Karagay for winter, but the park’s own seasonal outline treats October–April as a season for experienced visitors only.

Practical tips

  • Daylight. About 9 h in December, 9 h 19 min in January, 10 h 31 min in February (Almaty, solarwatch.app). Leave before dawn.
  • Batteries. Phones and cameras drain fast in the cold — keep a spare in an inside pocket.
  • Roads. Winter dirt roads can be snow, ice or ruts; check forecasts and park notices.
  • Fires and camping only in designated places, winter included.
  • Fees under Order No. 232 have no winter rate — see the fee calculator and the pre-departure checklist. All seasons in one list: top 10 nature destinations.
