Where to go in Kazakhstan in spring

Spring is the short window when the southern deserts and canyons are warm but not yet scorching: Greig's tulips bloom in Aksu-Zhabagly, the Altyn-Emel desert flowers, and Charyn hits its yearly peak of interest.

  7. 07 Katon-Karagay Late spring in the Altai means meadows in bloom, rivers in spate and the Kokkol and Arasan falls at full flow. May–June Kazakhstan's largest park 3+ days

Spring in Kazakhstan is a short gap between cold and heat. The high mountains are still snowbound — the Big Almaty Lake road carries avalanche risk until April, and the trail to the middle Kolsai lake only opens in April — but the deserts, canyons and foothills of the south are already warm and not yet baking. Altyn-Emel sees +15…+25 °C by day in April, against +33…+43 °C in July. It is tulip season and the desert is in flower, and according to our seasonality study April is one of Charyn’s two search peaks of the year.

The list runs from early to late spring: the south and the deserts first, the Altai last, where spring arrives around late May.

1. Aksu-Zhabagly — Greig’s tulips

Central Asia’s oldest nature reserve, in the Western Tian Shan, is the home of Greig’s tulip — its emblem, a large flower with crimson petals 12–15 cm long on a plant 20–30 cm tall. Kaufmann’s tulip grows here too; one well-known blooming spot is a hill locals call the Red Knoll. Greig’s tulip flowers in early to mid spring, but dates move from year to year and with altitude (the reserve rises from 1100 to 4236 m), so check conditions with the administration. Above all, this is a strict reserve: there is no free entry, and your route, date and escort must be agreed in advance. The Aksu canyon is reachable in spring as well, but May–June floods close the way down to the river. See Aksu-Zhabagly.

2. Altyn-Emel — the desert in bloom

NUR.KZ calls Altyn-Emel especially beautiful in spring, when the “lifeless” desert flowers — saxaul, acantholimon, sun rose and cistanche — blue patches of iris appear in the sand, and tulips of many kinds cover the stony slopes. The same piece describes the country around the Singing Dune and the Aktau chalk hills as very picturesque in April–May. Trekking Club gives April days of +15…+25 °C and nights of +2…+12 °C. Basshi is about 250 km from Almaty; a permit covers one route for one day, so the dune and the Aktau hills are two separate days. See Altyn-Emel, the Singing Dune and the Aktau hills.

3. Charyn Canyon — before the heat

April–May, along with September–October, is the most comfortable time in the canyon: summer leaves almost no shade on the floor, winter leaves too little daylight. In spring you can walk the Valley of Castles down to the river and back without hiding from the sun. It is about 195–200 km and 3–4 hours each way from Almaty — possible in a day, but an overnight lets you add the ash grove. 4. Tamgaly — petroglyphs near Almaty

The Tamgaly (Tanbaly) gorge in the Anrakai hills has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. Wikipedia counts about 2,000 images in the main gorge, and Tengrinews about 5,000 petroglyphs across the whole complex. It is 170 km from Almaty according to Wikipedia, about 180 km according to Tengrinews, and the drive takes 3–4 hours; Tengrinews warns that the last 40 km or so from the Kopa turn-off is no place for a low-slung car. Tengrinews also notes that people come all year round. It earns a spring slot as a low-altitude day out while the mountain trails are still under snow; we found no data on spring flowers at the site. See Tamgaly.

5. Turgen waterfalls — late spring

Turgen Gorge, on the eastern edge of Ile-Alatau National Park, is about an hour and a half (70–90 km) from Almaty. It has seven waterfalls: Bear Falls (30–40 m) is 1–1.5 km up a streamside path, while Kairak, at 2130 m, is a full day’s hike. Late spring to autumn is the easiest window — dry trails, a passable road. Above the gorge sits the Assy Plateau, which Tengrinews recommends for late spring and summer. In winter and early spring the checkpoint may run limited hours, so watch park notices. The Ile-Alatau fee is 0.15 MCI on foot. See Turgen waterfalls.

6. Bozzhyra and Mangystau — the spring window

Tengrinews names mid-April to late May as the main season for Bozzhyra: summer passes +40 °C, and nights drop by 20–30 degrees. Watch for rain — the clay ruts turn to mud after a downpour. Bozzhyra is about 300 km from Aktau, 4x4 only, with no signal; fuel is in Aktau, Zhanaozen and Shetpe. Since 1 September 2026 the Kyzylsai park fee is 0.7 MCI per car. A loop via Sherkala, Torysh, Bozzhyra and Karagiye takes about five days. See Bozzhyra and Mangystau.

7. Katon-Karagay — Altai meadows

Spring reaches the Altai last. The Aviasales guide’s seasonal outline for the park puts flowering meadows, full rivers and waterfalls in May–June — Kokkol included, and Arasan, which spills out of Rakhmanov Lake. Katon-Karagay village is about 380 km and five hours from Ust-Kamenogorsk, with roadworks on parts of the route. It is a border area, so read up on the border zone first, and pack a warm sleeping bag for May nights. See Katon-Karagay.

Practical tips

  • Bloom dates drift. Neither Aksu-Zhabagly nor Altyn-Emel has reliable dates — just “early to mid spring” or “April–May”. Ask the parks.
  • Nights are cold. Desert nights can drop to around +2 °C after a warm day.
  • Don’t pick flowers. Greig’s tulip grows in protected areas where disturbing nature is forbidden.
  • Fees: calculator; prep: before you go. Next up: summer.
