About 4.5 km long with 8-seat cabins and up to 2,000 riders an hour; it was built for the 2011 Asian Winter Games.

The base station sits at 2,260 m and the top of the lifts at Talgar Pass, 3,200 m. A gondola of about 4.5 km links it with Medeu in up to 15 minutes. Skiing here goes back a long way: races have been held since 1950, and the ski base opened properly in 1954 with a 1,500 m drag lift. The gondola from Medeu was built for the 2011 Asian Winter Games.

Getting to Shymbulak

Bus to Medeu. City bus No. 12 runs to the Medeu sports complex — see our Medeu page.

Gondola up. From Medeu the M1 gondola climbs to the resort, and the Kombi-1 and Kombi-2 chairlifts continue to Talgar Pass. During maintenance closures, Bes.media reported in 2025, people went up by eco-bus, taxi, private car or on foot.

By car — not in 2026. According to NewTimes.kz (15 October 2026), the road into the Shymbulak valley is closed to vehicles from 24 July to 30 November 2026 while a 5.7 km gas pipeline and 2.7 km of sewers are laid. From 19 to 22 October it was shut even to walkers near the Gorelnik visitor centre. On top of that, the city council approved new entry rules for the Medeu park on 18 September 2026: petrol and diesel cars restricted, electric cars on weekdays only.

When to go

Winter. The season runs roughly November to April, but snow decides. In 2025 the resort officially opened on 6 December with the Talgar, Zelyonaya Polyana, Bely Mishka and Ak Barsik runs, adding more slopes and night skiing as it got colder (24.kz). Russian Wikipedia lists night skiing on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 19:00–23:00 — confirm with the resort.

Shoulder season. The lifts stop for maintenance every autumn. In 2026: M1, K-1 and K-2 from 19 October to 1 November, KKD-4 from 12 October (NewTimes.kz). In 2025 the dates were different — the gondola from 6 to 17 October, Kombi-2 from 15 September to 1 November (Bes.media). Between mid-September and early November, always check the schedule.

Summer. Summer is nearly as busy as winter: of 1.1 million visitors in January–October 2025, more than 450,000 came in summer. People ride the gondola, go up to Talgar Pass for the view, try the rope park and hike.

Hikes from Shymbulak

  • Talgar Pass, 3,200 m — the top of the lifts; the downhill course from the pass is 3,500 m long.
  • Mynzhylky plateau — about 3,000 m, roughly three hours up a wide road from the resort; the season runs from May to late September (Tengrinews). The name means “a thousand mares”.
  • Gorelnik and Butakovka waterfall — further down the valley, reached from Medeu.
Not verified yet Sources disagree on the base altitude: 2,260 m in Russian Wikipedia, 2,200 m in English Wikipedia. We could not find a primary source that settles it.

Practical tips

  • Check the lift schedule between mid-September and early November — maintenance dates change every year.
  • Do not count on driving in autumn 2026: the valley road is shut until 30 November and new limits apply to petrol and diesel cars at the Medeu checkpoint.
  • Allow about 35 minutes of lift time from Medeu to Talgar Pass, plus any queues.
  • For Mynzhylky, start in the morning: about three hours up, then the walk back.
  • In October 2026 Tele2/Altel said it had boosted the signal at Medeu and Shymbulak for winter (Zakon.kz); we found no data for the trails above the resort, so save maps offline.

What it costs

Shymbulak is a resort, not a national park, so there are no MRP-based park fees. The resort sets its own prices for the gondola, ski passes and rental, and they change by season and day of the week. Check current prices with the resort before you go.

Not part of Ile-Alatau

The resort is surrounded by Ile-Alatau National Park but legally belongs to the Medeu regional nature park, run by the Almaty city government.
