Saryarka – Steppe and Lakes of Northern Kazakhstan, inscribed 2008. Covers territories in the north, including the Korgalzhyn and Naurzum reserves. Korgalzhyn marks the northernmost breeding limit of the greater flamingo.

Western Tien-Shan, 2016, transnational with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. On the Kazakh side it includes Aksu-Zhabagly — the first reserve in Kazakhstan and Central Asia, founded in 1926 — and Sayram-Ugam National Park.

Cold Winter Deserts of Turan, 2023, transnational with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The most overlooked of the three: deserts that freeze in winter are a rare ecosystem type and almost never appear in travel round-ups.

Cultural sites

SiteYear
Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi2003
Petroglyphs of the Archaeological Landscape of Tanbaly2004
Silk Roads: the Routes Network of Chang’an-Tianshan Corridor2014

The last was inscribed very recently and has barely reached the guidebooks.

What the status means for a visitor

In practice, little. Inscription changes neither access nor price: rules follow the protected-area category and the tariff order, not the heritage status.

Its significance lies elsewhere — international recognition and state obligations to conserve. For trip planning it is more useful to know whether a place is a park or a strict reserve: a zapovednik on the UNESCO list is still closed to casual visits.
