What entry to Charyn Canyon actually costs
865 tenge per person per day, 3,027.5 per car entry. But three other figures circulate online, and each of them has an explanation.
Verified: 2026-09

Short answer: 865 tenge per person per day and 3,027.5 tenge per car entry. The order lists these as two separate lines: a car pays once per entry, people pay for every day. Work out your own combination of people, days and transport in the calculator. How checkpoints apply the per-person line to car passengers is something we have not verified on site.
Beyond that come the nuances that produce at least three other figures in search results. No source we know of explains them, so here they are.
2026 tariffs
Only Kolsai Lakes has exactly the same scale. Altyn-Emel, Karkaraly and Katon-Karagay charge the same per person but different vehicle rates, and Ile-Alatau is lower on both. All 29 areas side by side are in the comparison.
| Category | 2026 | in MCI |
|---|---|---|
| pedestrian, per person | 865 ₸ | 0.2 |
| motorcycle, moped, quad bike | 1 730 ₸ | 0.4 |
| car | 3 027.5 ₸ | 0.7 |
| minibus (up to 16 seats) and lorry | 11 677.5 ₸ | 2.7 |
| bus, up to 32 seats | 21 625 ₸ | 5 |
| bus, over 32 seats | 34 600 ₸ | 8 |
| car parking, per day | 216.25 ₸ | 0.05 |
Tariffs are set in Monthly Calculation Index units, not in tenge. MCI for 2026 is 4,325 ₸, and it is revised every January by the budget law — so the tenge amounts change on their own.

Why the price changes every January without a new order
The tariff is not written in tenge. The regulation states a fraction of the Monthly Calculation Index: 0.2 MCI per pedestrian, 0.7 MCI per car. The index is reset each year by the budget law.
| Year | MCI | Pedestrian tariff |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 3,932 ₸ | 786 ₸ |
| 2026 | 4,325 ₸ | 865 ₸ |
The practical consequence: any tenge figure found in an article without a stated year is probably wrong. Multiply 0.2 by the current index and you have the correct number for any year.
There are two payments, and they are not the same thing
| Protected area usage charge | Service tariff | |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | Tax Code, article 510 of chapter 74 | Order of the authorised body |
| Amount | 0.1 MCI | 0.2 MCI for trails and viewpoints |
| Nature | a tax payment for using the territory | payment for a specific service |
This is where the confusion comes from. “815 tenge” is 0.2 MCI calculated on an earlier index. “3,000 tenge” is usually a commercial tour including transfer and guide, not an entrance ticket.
Discounts
Almost no source lists these, though it is the first thing families ask.

What is charged separately
- vehicle parking, per space per day
- transfer down into the canyon, per seat one way
- yurts with services, per night
- hotel rooms, per person per night
- pitches for catering, trade and tented camps, per square metre
- an accompanying ranger-guide
- professional film and photo shoots
The descent transfer is the practical one. Walking down the equipped path is free; the climb back in the heat is what people underestimate.
Charyn compared to the Grand Canyon
If you are weighing the two: Charyn is smaller — walls of 150–300 metres against more than a kilometre — and its canyon section runs about 80 km against 446. Different scale entirely.
What Charyn has is emptiness. The park recorded just over 20,000 visitors in a year; the Grand Canyon takes that in a couple of days in high season. And Charyn sits about three hours by road from a city of two million.
Coming here expecting Arizona leads to disappointment. Coming for an empty canyon where you can hear silence is the right reason.
