Valley of Castles, Charyn: the dirt road along the floor

Charyn in a day, or staying overnight

A day trip works, and most people do exactly that. Staying over makes sense if you want the light and the ash grove.

A day trip works. About 195 km each way — 3–4 hours behind the wheel, by Kazakh Tourism’s estimate — the Valley of Castles takes a few hours on foot, and most visitors fit it into one day. Entry for two people in a car comes to 1.1 MCI. Stay overnight if you want the good light, the ash grove, or simply not to spend half the day rushing.

The question is what you give up.

What a day gives you

You see the main thing: the Valley of Castles. Three kilometres of tract, the descent, the canyon floor, the walls. For a first visit that is enough.

Costs stay low — entry, fuel, food you bring. The entry part is set in MCI and easy to work out in advance.

ItemTariff
Per person, per day0.2 MCI
Passenger car, per entry0.7 MCI
Car parking, per day0.05 MCI
Park transport down into the canyon, per seat one way0.2 MCI
Two people, one car, walking down1.1 MCI

Tariffs are from appendix 14 of Order No. 232. The MCI is revised every January, so we do not print local-currency amounts; the national park fee calculator converts them for the current year. We leave out fuel and food — those numbers change more often than the tariffs do.

Timing a day trip

Daylight is the resource that runs out first. Almaty monthly averages (solarwatch.app):

SeasonSunriseSunsetDaylight
May4:3019:0914 h 39 min
June4:1319:3515 h 22 min
September5:3218:0512 h 33 min
October6:0617:1211 h 06 min
December7:1816:189 h 00 min

That gives a working plan:

  1. Leave Almaty at sunrise or earlier. 3–4 hours on the Narynkol highway, the junction, the signposted turn and roughly 10 km of dirt road to the checkpoint. Step by step: getting to Charyn Canyon from Almaty.
  2. Checkpoint and payment. Keep the receipt — being on the territory without proof of payment is prohibited by the rules.
  3. The descent, on foot down the equipped path or with the park’s transport.
  4. The Valley of Castles — three kilometres along a level floor, west to east.
  5. The climb out — the hardest part of the day, especially in heat. This is where many people use the park’s transport.
  6. The drive back, with enough margin to cover the dirt road in daylight.

In summer the plan fits comfortably. In October it is tight; in December it is at the limit: nine hours of daylight minus six to eight hours of driving.

What a day trip costs you

The light. Arriving in the middle of the day means the worst possible illumination: sun overhead, short shadows, the red sandstone looking flat. The morning and evening light photographers come for belongs to those who stay.

The ash grove. Sarytogay is a separate point on the territory, and day trips routinely skip it. According to Wikipedia it lies about 20 km from the canyon — a relict Paleogene forest that turns gold in autumn. See the Sarytogay ash grove.

The other routes. In June 2026 the Committee for Forestry and Wildlife listed four visitor routes for the park: the Charyn ash grove, Charyn Canyon — Valley of Castles, Burial grounds and kurgans, and Temirlik — the Small Canyon. In a day you can realistically see one, two at best.

Calm. A day trip is a race: drive, descend, climb, get back before dark.

What staying gives you

Park materials list yurts with services, guest houses and pitches for tented camps, each charged separately per night. Order No. 232 sets their tariffs in MCI:

Park serviceTariff
Yurt with services, per day2.7 MCI
Hotel room, luxury, per person per day2 MCI
Hotel room, standard, per person per day1 MCI
Tent camp pitch, per square metre per day0.008 MCI

Staying removes the race and adds two windows of good light instead of none. Where you may pitch a tent and what you need for it is covered in camping at Charyn.

The MCI rates come from Order No. 232; we have not checked whether every listed facility is currently open.

How to decide

Go for the day if: it is a first visit, your time is limited, and the Valley of Castles is what you came for.

Stay if: you are here for photographs, want to see the grove, plan to reach the quieter canyons, or simply dislike travelling at a run.

In summer, staying changes the trip most. There is no shade in the canyon, and Kazakh Tourism quotes summer temperatures of up to +35 °C. A midday walk in the heat is an ordeal. An early start is only possible if you are already there.

Five day-trip mistakes

The wrong turn at the junction. Where the Almaty–Chundzha and Almaty–Narynkol roads split, take the Narynkol direction: the turn signposted for Charyn Canyon is on the Narynkol highway. The mistake costs an hour, and on a short day that is half your walk.

Walking at noon in summer. The hardest hours of the day coincide with the flattest light. If you arrive at eleven, start with the viewpoints on the rim and go down later, when the walls are already casting shade.

Underestimating the climb. Going down takes little effort; coming back up the same path in heat is another matter. Decide in advance whether you will walk up or use the park’s transport, and budget the time.

No cash. You pay at the checkpoint, and we have not confirmed whether cards are accepted there. Cash on the steppe makes sense anyway.

A lost receipt. The visiting rules prohibit being on the territory without proof of payment. Keep it on you until you leave, not in the glovebox at the car park.

On connectivity: we have not checked mobile coverage on the territory, so an offline map and a downloaded route are part of the preparation.

If you have more days

The road east from Almaty makes it natural to combine Charyn with lakes and gorges along the way. A ready-made plan with overnight stops is in the three-day route.

Frequently asked questions

Can Charyn be done as a day trip from Almaty?
Yes, and it is the most common format. The drive is about 195 km each way, and the Valley of Castles takes a few hours to walk.
What does a day trip cost you?
The light. Arriving midday means seeing the canyon in its flattest illumination. Morning and evening light belongs to those who stay. You also usually skip the ash grove.
How long is the drive from Almaty to Charyn Canyon?
About 195 km; Kazakh Tourism estimates 3–4 hours each way. The last roughly 10 km to the checkpoint are unpaved.
What time should I leave Almaty for a day trip?
In summer, around sunrise (about 4:13 on average in June); in winter, before dawn — December daylight in Almaty is about 9 hours.
How much is entry for a car for one day?
Two people in a passenger car pay 1.1 MCI: 0.2 MCI per person per day plus 0.7 MCI for the car. The park’s transport down into the canyon is another 0.2 MCI per seat, one way.
Can I see both the Valley of Castles and the ash grove in one day?
In principle, yes, but the grove is about 20 km from the canyon and eats into daylight. Realistic in summer, hardly possible in winter.
Where can I stay overnight at Charyn?
Park materials list yurts, guest houses and tent pitches, each charged per night. Order No. 232 sets their tariffs in MCI; which facilities are operating now is unconfirmed.
